The House on the Hill,
a Short Love Story ~ continued
"Not
to get into your business, Jane, but I take
it that funds are tight."
"Tighter
than a banjo," Jane sighed again. "I've
sold everything that I owned just to keep
us afloat because the job market is also
tight. My bank account is running on empty
and no one seems to need a chef. I suppose
that the only way out is to sell the house.
I was hoping that it wouldn't come to that."
Pausing
briefly, she gazed teary eyes into his handsome
face and managed, "I'll miss you."
She had
never felt so embarrassed, spilling her
troubles to a man like Zane. Perhaps she
should have let him known of her interest
in him long ago. But what would a man like
Zane want with a ready made family? For
that matter, with a woman like her? A nobody.
A woman with dreams of owning a silly restaurant
one day - something that wasn't in the cards.
Nope. She was holding a handful of jokers.
"I
need a chef," Zane informed, Jane jerking
her eyes up to connect with his serious
looking face.
"Zane,
what do you need with a chef? Doesn't your
housekeeper Etta usually take care of your
meals when she pops in?"
"She
only pops in once a week, and then after
a couple of days I'm back to frozen meals.
Jane, is the thought of being my chef so
repelling?"
She put
her pizza aside and wrapped her hands around
his clasped ones as best as she could. "I
appreciate what you're hinting at, Zane
and I'd like nothing more than to be your
chef. I'm at my rope's end, and if it were
just me, that would be okay. But there's
little Nadine to look out after."
"Then
it's settled," Zane decided, his face
lighting with a smile. "Here's the
plan. Go collect your things and I'll help settle
you and Nadine into the east wing. You can
see the sun rise from that level. I'm sure
that she'll like that-"
"Move
here? Oh but Zane - that's not possible,"
Jane protested, the thought of a real bed
a delicious one.
"Oh
yes it's possible, Jane," he assured,
rising and placing a protective arm around
her shoulder as she sat thinking. "This
monstrosity of a house needs some life in
its belly and you and Nadine fit the bill."
"But
Zane-"
"She
starts to school shortly, Jane," he
reminded, trying to make her see reason.
"You'll be able to be right there for
her - whenever she needs you."
"But
Zane, we can't live here," Jane argued.
"That's far too generous."
"You
can and you will, Jane. You certainly can't
continue to live in a house that's empty.
That's no place for a little girl, or a
woman like you. As for the little yellow
house, why not rent it out? Save the money
and perhaps, before too long, that restaurant
can become a reality."
She began
crying even harder than Nadine had earlier
today, Zane feeling inclined to pull her
up to him, offering her words of comfort
as he held her close.
When she
was able to collect her breath, she gazed
into his face and told him, "I'd kiss
you right now if it wouldn't leave you with
the wrong impression."
"Oh?"
Jane shook
her head, her golden locks spilling over
her cheeks. "You know, it's nice to
be saved by one's hero. I've always held
a great interest for you Zane, and now I
know why. You've got a good heart. Very
rare indeed."
He twisted
his head to one side and asked for confirmation,
"You're attracted to me? Or, is it
perhaps a feeling of indebtedness do you
think - not that you need to feel indebted-"
Zane got
no further and Jane caressed his lips with
a passionate kiss that rocked both their
worlds.....
Jane sat
eyeing her husband in the pretty park as
he swung Nadine.
It's amazing
what can happen in a few short months, she
silently reflected. Just six months ago,
Zane had taken her and Nadine beneath his
wings. Two months later, they had been married.
And only last week, her dream of a restaurant
had appeared over the horizon, Zane presenting
it as a birthday surprise.
She'd never
been happier - not because of the restaurant,
but because of the wonderful man who lived
in the house on the hill.....
