The House on the Hill,
a Short Love Story ~ continued
"The
sitter left me all alone, Mr. Zane. Said
she wasn't staying if there wasn't a tv."
"You
mean - she just walked out of the house?"
"Uh
huh. Right after Aunty Jane left. Took the
necklace, too. I'm hungry. Do you have cookies?" Nadine
asked, her eyes looking so wide and innocent.
"You
bet! And some milk, too."
"Some
for me?"
"Absolutely,"
he assured.
"Oh
goody!" Nadine yelled out, wrapping
her tiny arms around him and delivering
a hug to Zane's neck.
"Let's
leave Aunty a note on the front door, okay?
Then we'll go have those cookies,"
he told her.
Nadine
nodded and he set her feet to the ground,
then held her tiny hand as they walked into
the back door to locate some paper and a
writing instrument.
After a
bit of roaming through the house, Zane stood
frozen in time as his eyes dusted over the
pristine area which was void of furniture.
No fridge in the kitchen, no dining room
table, no sofa, no pictures, no beds - just one lumpy
looking sleeping bag.
"Nadine,
where is all your stuff?" Zane
eased out, disturbed by what he was seeing.
"Aunty
sold it all. We were going to move to Colorado
for her new job. Only we got a call saying
that they changed their mind. Wonder why
they did that, Mr. Zane?"
"Well,
I suppose they must be idiots," he told
her, Nadine giggling in the process as he
bent down and tweaked her nose. However,
he had to admit that he was glad the job
had fallen through. To think that he'd come
so close to losing her. Losing her? But
he'd never even had her, he silently reflected.
Nadine
rushed to the side of the sleeping bag and
produced a small box, then handed Zane a
red crayon and a tiny sheet of paper embossed
with a blue dolphin.
"Will
this do?"
"Great!"
he assured, taking the paper and crayon,
then jotting out a short note to Jane: 'Nadine's
with me. Zane.'
When Jane
materialized, he had just put down Nadine
for an afternoon nap.
There was
still half a pizza left in the kitchen which
he'd prepared for Nadine to enjoy alongside
the cookies and milk.
He nodded
towards the pizza and eased out to Jane,
"Frozen and nothing like something
you would create, but it's tasty.
Would you like some?"
She nodded
after a hesitant pause, her hunger appearing
to override the moment.
As they
settled in at the oak table in the kitchen,
she told him, "Zane, I can't thank
you enough for rescuing Nadine. If something
would have happened.... I-I don't even want
to think about that."
"Well,
nothing happened and she's very safe,"
he reflected, unsure of how to pose his
question to Jane, but knowing that he must.
He watched her take several bites of the
pizza, deciding that she was as hungry as
Nadine had been. Then carefully, he probed,
"Jane, Nadine tells me that the job
in Colorado fell through."
Jane looked
a bit startled, then sighed, deciding that
it was useless trying to glitter the situation.
At the
moment, she just wanted to slip into Zane's
warm embrace and be comforted. If not for
Nadine, she would have given the handsome
Zane a run for his money long ago. There
was a definite attraction - had been from
the beginning and something bubbled deep
inside of her, something much deeper than
friendship.
He was
a great catch, but she knew that by the
time she would be able to pursue something
more than friendship with him, he would have already been caught
by a beautiful mermaid.
Even so,
she couldn't imagine her life without Nadine.
Although the job in Colorado had fallen
through, in some odd sort of way she had
been relieved, leaving Zane a bit painful
to think about, much like her thoughts concerning
Nadine when the sitter had stranded her.
She told
him, "Yes, that's right, Zane.
Unfortunately, I quit my old job and had
everything in place for the transfer. Then
everything went to hell in a hand basket.
When I tried to secure my old job, another
chef had been hired. And once word gets
around, it's hard securing another position."
