Who Chopped Down the Family Tree?
"Ruben, I need your help,"
Cora eased out, retching inwardly with guilt
over the intense well of passion that she
felt for her cousin. "I've been
in love with you since I can remember."
For years she had fought an attraction
to her cousin, disturbed with herself for
allowing her thoughts to run so rampant.
And with Ruben's recent advancement
towards her, it was getting more and more
difficult to fight her desires.
She supposed it was common, cousins sharing
intimacy. And in some countries, marriage
was commonplace among cousins. However, she wasn't
comfortable with these desires and
needed Ruben's help in ridding her of the
great curse. She didn't think she
could bear not ever seeing him again, but
that was perhaps the best solution.
"Of course you love me, Cora,"
Ruben rebounded. "We're cousins."
Her statement had quickened his senses,
his response an effort to coax her into
expounding on the type of love she felt
for him. He needed clarity before
he shared his secret.
For weeks he had delivered subtle hints
here and there, hoping to stoke a rod of
passion within her. Had his plan worked?
"No, you don't understand,"
she assured, drawing the lace hanky back
to her nose. It was with great effort that
she held back her wall of tears. "It's....more
than love."
Ruben lifted his brows and in a soft
tone, she uncomfortably relayed, "It's
passion."
That did it - the wall was broken and
tears suddenly exploded, her body trembling
as he drew her to him.
"Cupcake, it's okay," he assured,
running a hand over the back of her head,
the texture of her dark hair like silk to
his rough hands. "I feel the
same about you."
Cora's tears immediately ceased and she
jerked back her head to study her cousin's
handsome face. "Oh Ruben! What
are we to do? What's to become of
us!"
