Jim shuffled his feet that were hugged deep inside the lizard-skinned boots, one eye on the path in front of him, the other on Felicia standing under the canopy of the four-bent barn.

Love could be difficult, he supposed in silence. Being a man, tradition had elected him to make the first move. Although he wasn't afraid of much of anything in life, he was feeling a bit uneasy over Felicia's potential rejection.

After all, what would the prettiest girl in the county want with a dusty old cowboy as himself? He was too rough around the edges while she was as smooth and shapely as a fine hourglass frozen in time. And her mane was so shiny, so golden that he supposed many a horse had possessed a jealous streak whenever Felicia had been near.

Felicia narrowed her blue eyes in the distance as she watched Jim clip closer to her, slowly sealing the gap between them. Odd that he'd be visiting her father's ranch on a Monday - for it was the busiest day at his ranch. He'd even commented about the busy week ahead when she had spoken with him yesterday before the church service had began.

Perhaps she'd misunderstood. Jim had a way of making her feel all a-flutter, like a butterfly trying to shake off its cocoon. Of course, any aspirations of a romance with Jim had fled her thoughts many moons ago, for he was a loner. Felicia supposed that a female would only tie him down and a man like Jim needed his space. At least she was wise enough to sense that.

"Hi Jim," she eased out as he met her, tipping his hat in the process. "Another meeting with my father?" she asked.

"Actually, I came to see you, Felicia," he drawled, the announcement making her catch her breath in her throat.

"Oh?"

"Say yes to a date with me?" he asked, hopping that he didn't appear like a begging dog - not that he wouldn't have.

"I'd like nothing more," Felicia eased out, her lips slowly igniting with a genuine smile, feeling as if she'd just slipped out of her cocoon - like a carefree butterfly fluttering its wings for the first time.

Jim flashed back a smile and she giggled as he commented, "Well, if I would have known that, I would have asked a lot sooner."
